In 1988, the Vancouver International Marathon Society asked Pacific Road Runners to host a Half Marathon in February as a build-up event to the Vancouver Marathon in May. The club obliged and built one of Canada’s premier running events. The goal from the start was to provide a quality race for runners, with a secondary goal to raise money for local causes. In 1995 the event partnered with Variety – The Children’s Charity to provide help to BC children and their families and has donated over $700,000 to date!

New as of 2019, the ‘First Half’ Half Marathon will be organized by the Vancouver International Marathon Society RUNVAN®, the local non-profit who also organizes Vancouver’s only Marathon and other local running events.

“We thought it was time to pass along the torch, and it’s only fitting that we bring the ‘First Half’ back to the Vancouver International Marathon Society, another non-profit,” shares Race Director Terry Bushnell of the Pacific Road Runners. The event has been entirely organized by volunteers over the years.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to also thank everyone for their support of the ‘First Half’ Half Marathon, which has become a fixture in the local running scene,” adds Bushnell. RUNVAN® will continue to honour those initiatives you’ve grown to love.
