The First Half invites elites and competitive athletes to race in this event. Our objective is to provide national caliber athletes with the opportunity to compete and meet the selection criteria for national teams, and to encourage overall competition. As a local non-profit, RUNVAN® encourages personal improvement for elites and all runners.

Qualifications

To qualify as an Elite Athlete, you must have run on a certified course in the past 12 months:

  • Men: sub 1:10 Half Marathon or equivalent – sub 31:40 10KM or sub 2:30 Marathon
  • Women: sub 1:20 for the Half Marathon or equivalent – sub 36:20 10KM or sub 2:50 Marathon

To qualify as a Masters Elite Athlete (40+), you must have run on a certified course in the past 12 months:

  • Male: sub 1:15 Half Marathon or equivalent – sub 34:00 10KM or sub 2:45 Marathon
  • Female: sub 1:25 for the Half Marathon or equivalent – sub 38:00 10KM or sub 3:10 Marathon

Any former overall winner of the First Half, male or female, will also be granted Elite Athlete status and comped entry.

How to Apply

To request an elite entry, please apply to our Elite Coordinator at lynn@runvan.org, including details of qualifying performances. Please let us know as early as possible if you plan to enter!

Elite Athlete entries are non-transferrable. Please note that all athletes must have their own identification to enter and exit the country. No letters of invitation or authorization will be forwarded. RUNVAN® reserves the right to deny entry.

Pay and register for the sold-out event up until December 15.

Qualifications

To qualify as a Competitive Athlete, you must have finished the First Half within the last two years with times as follows:

  • Men: sub 1:20 Half Marathon
  • Women: sub 1:30 Half Marathon
  • Top 3 Age Category Finish in the last two years

Competitive entries are non-transferrable. Regular entry fees apply. RUNVAN® reserves the right to deny entry. Please notify us as early as possible if you plan to enter. Thank you!

Elites vs Competitive

Elite Athletes and Age Category Champions from the previous year earn complimentary race entry. Competitive runners will be allowed to enter the sold-out event but must also register and pay like all other participants. Thank you for understanding. We hope to see you on the Start Line of Canada’s Fastest Half!

Only the winning time earns the course bonus. Prize money is cumulative. Male and Female athletes earn equal prize money – i.e. $2,000 for a Male and an equal $2,000 for a Female who may break the event record with a winning time.
